What's sad is the majority of people are stupid and don't really have common sense. The average person, "The third party warning is there for a reason but I think I should still ignore it and install anything I find."

oh come on, no need to go full caps here. If youre careful while surfing the web you dont need to scan your pc 100 times a day And if you really wanna see what that little piece of executable code does, put on a virtual operating system using VMWare and try running it on the virtual pc. It should protect your normal system.

This thing looks really stupid.

The text (in German only) claims that there will be an mini-pet event in Shing Jea, and this is some kind of promotion for everyone to obtain them before then.

The file also asks for your account name, password and a character name.

So, anyone with a shred of common sense should realize something is wrong. I don't know if it does anything beyond that.

Lesson to remember: Never ever write your account information anywhere outside your official guild wars client.

GET THE BEST ANTI SPYWARE AND PAY FOR IT AS THE FREE ONES LIKE ADAWARE/SPYBOT DONT CUT IT COMPARED TO SPYWARE DOCTOR/SPYSWEEPER
What does your spyware doctor say about this executable? My guess would be nothing, since it's not a keylogger, nor a spyware. It simply asks the user to enter account information, then sends it.

How did you come across that program? There are no general purpose keyloggers for GW that you could possibly install accidentally.

You just suggested people use Spyware Doctor and SpySweeper... I must go find a corner to cry in.

Here's a good site that uses 18 different scanners online. It might come in handy for someone. http://virusscan.jotti.org/

What's with these people always posting that "peoples too stupid to load this stuff desrves itts!!!11". I'm thinking they're pretty dense themselves if they don't realized this is a popular game that children play too and there are people who are not very computer literate also. Children usually don't have their own computer, so when they get infected it's their parents' numbers that get stolens. And who would want free stuffs? Children of course, they're trusting. I personally hate scammers but you have to get your experience somewhere, we don't all start off as super nerds.
I just use a norton spyware scanner and a yahoo spyware scanner I got free with the yahoo toolbar often.

*shrug* Adaware and HijackThis (i believe thats what its called havent needed it in a while...) served all my needs back when I needed anti-spyware stuff

And sir green it isn't even really a matter of being computer illiterate, its a matter of using an obviously unofficial keygen, entering in account info despite it telling you numerous times not to, and trying to get a free item that you know you shouldn't have being that it is an unofficial keygen...
on another note, you usually need to be 18 to sign up for an online game service, and if a parent signs their underage kid up without any kind of safety measure in place, then the parent kinda deserves it too if something happens heh... guild wars is not a babysitter stop using it as one T.T

Back on topic... That link? It's a keylogger that sends out your GW passwords to bierdroppa@???.de, a mail registered in the "name" of some kiddie maan.

there.

Edit: Apparently, it's not even a keylogger. It outright goes ahead and asks your e-mail and password.

Im not gonna comment on scanning a computer before every gw session.. thats Absolutely retarded.

Only reason you should ever do that is if you search for ware downloads sites through a search engine.. sheesh. Besides that use your brain and realize there is no such thing as free minipets. Like stated on the last page (Too lazy to go back) Everybody on the internet is out to get you.

weekly check is good...

daily check...ok...good for the paranoid

every time you start up gw check...yes that's retarded...unless you regularly download programs most would consider suspicious...it's overkill

using common sense when downloading programs or opening emails has kept my system free of any form of malware since I started using computers some 15 years ago or so.

Pamelf,
If you have a (commercial) virus scanner, check the supplier.
Most of them have a point where you can submit malware/trojans and the like.
You can submit the link to the executable, no need to download it yourself.
Most of them will add a signature in their anti-virus database, protecting their customers.
When you report, you'll get responce back on the outcome (at least, that's my experience). Then you'll know what it does.
Oooh awesome! thanks.
